Ohio StatehouseWe Protect
Professional Engineers &
the Practice of Engineering!

The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) are on the firing line of the profession.  Our members present the professional engineer's point of view to legislators and administration officials, track legislation, provide testimony and facilitate constructive government action at all three levels--local, state and federal.

As a member, you join thousands of other professional engineers in supporting advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. and Columbus.  Our members protect against major challenge to Ohio's PE laws, present the professional engineer's point of view to legislators and their staff, and initiate sound legislation.

We make you voice heard!

NSPE and OSPE also operate effective political action committees.  As David B.Capitol Steinman, P.E., noted professional engineer and NSPE founder, said, "NSPE is the fighting arm of the engineering profession."  The Society fights vigorously for your rights.

OSPE attacks the illegal practice of engineering by acting as a clearinghouse for violation information.  Those suspected of violating the Ohio Engineering Practice Act are alerted to the law's existence and asked to comply.

OSPE fights aggressive legislation that tries to weaken the status of professional engineers.

OSPE protects our strong registration and title laws.

NSPE defends the Brooks Act, which mandates federal procurement of engineering services through a qualifications-based selection system.

OSPE and NSPE oppose legislation and court decisions that further restrict your rights as a professional engineer.

The Ohio Engineers Public Policy Leadership Forum brings our members together to learn about current state level issues facing us today and mobilize our efforts for an afternoon of visits with legislators at the Statehouse.

There will be many laws and regulations formed in the near future. Will you be represented?

Our History
OSPE was founded in 1878 by a group of engineers and surveyors to advance the interests of engineering and surveying in Ohio. High on our founders’ agenda was promoting public recognition of their work and providing opportunities for fellowship of its members in public and private practice.  Surveying has always been closely aligned with engineering, with many historical figures including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson having been educated in both professions. Drawing Tools

In June, 1933, OSPE was one of the first statewide engineering organizations to secure legislation providing for state registration and a registration board to administer licensing examinations to qualified engineers seeking to work in Ohio.

Today, the 3,000 member organization, through its 19 chapters, works closely with Ohio's State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors to improve registration laws and their administration, and to help enforce legal and professional standards.

NSPE's goals are carried out at three levels--chapter, state and national. Chapters usually meet monthly in conjunction with educational programs, professional development training and inspiring speakers. You can participate in a multilevel organization.

OSPE is governed by a Board of Directors composed of officers and representatives from each chapter.  OSPE currently has 20 chapters, representing every county in Ohio.  Through five practice divisions OSPE represents the basic areas of engineering practice: industry, private practice, construction, government and education.

OSPE's members come from every technical discipline in engineering:
